GES Director raises alarm over 300 teacher shortage in Asutifi North District

The Ghana Education Service (GES) Director for Asutifi North District in the Ahafo Region, Naomi Asantewaa, has raised concerns over a severe shortage of teachers in the district, revealing that schools are currently grappling with a deficit of about 300 teachers.

According to her, the situation is seriously affecting the quality of teaching and learning across the district’s schools.

Mrs Asantewaa made the remarks at Kenyasi during a donation ceremony where the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, presented 50 computers to 10 basic schools, particularly targeting rural communities with limited access to digital learning resources.

Speaking to Adom News, the GES Director described the donation as a major boost to ICT education in the district, especially for underserved schools. However, she stressed that investments in infrastructure and technology alone would not achieve the desired results without enough teachers to support learning.

She noted that the growing teacher shortage continues to place pressure on schools and undermine efforts to improve educational outcomes.

Mrs Asantewaa also appealed to corporate bodies, NGOs and philanthropists to support schools in the district with more computers and other educational resources, saying efforts to bridge the digital gap must go beyond government intervention.

The MP, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, accompanied by Presiding Member Bawa Issaka, assured residents that more schools in the district would receive computers before the end of his tenure.

He said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen ICT education and equip students with the skills needed for an increasingly digital world.

The donation highlights ongoing attempts by district authorities to modernise teaching and learning in Asutifi North, even as stakeholders continue to call on the government to address the long-standing challenges with teacher recruitment and deployment in the area.
