Kobbie Mainoo Should Be Playing for Ghana, Not England — Kurt Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, says it is disappointing to see footballers of African heritage choosing to represent European nations instead of their countries of origin.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Okraku expressed concern about the growing trend, insisting that players with strong African roots should consider representing their ancestral nations on the international stage.

The GFA president specifically referenced Kobbie Mainoo, saying the Manchester United midfielder could have represented Ghana.

“Full-blooded Ghanaians should be representing their countries. That’s my clear opinion on representation when it comes to national teams in football,” he told Sky Sports.

Despite his views, Okraku acknowledged the quality of the England national team and praised its technical leadership.

“But having said that, I think that England has a good team. It’s important we respect the manager and the experience that he brings on board, but what is also true is that they will meet a very, very competitive and determined Ghanaian side,” he said.

When asked directly about Mainoo’s decision to represent England, Okraku described the situation as unfortunate.

“Well, it’s most unfortunate, to be honest,” he added.

He also reflected on the broader debate surrounding African talent representing European countries, citing the composition of past international teams.

“I wish I never comment on such situations because, for example, when I watched the French national team win the World Cup, and the team is made up of Africans, it always tells me there’s a subject that has to be discussed,” he said.

Mainoo is expected to face Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when England come up against the Black Stars at the tournament.
