Flooded Obom–Odunkwa Bridge leaves residents stranded, commuters charged GH¢100 to cross

Heavy rains in parts of the Greater Accra Region have submerged the Obom–Odunkwa Bridge in the Obom-Domeabra Constituency, disrupting transport and leaving residents stranded.

The flooding, which followed recent downpours, has made the bridge impassable for vehicles and effectively cut off movement between nearby communities.

Residents say the situation has caused significant hardship, with commuters forced to find alternative—and often difficult—ways to cross the flooded section.

Some community members also report that individuals are charging between GH¢50 and GH¢100 to help people cross, a practice they describe as exploitative.

The issue has sparked renewed concern among residents and landlords, who say repeated appeals for government intervention have so far gone unanswered.

According to them, the bridge’s condition has been a long-standing problem that worsens every rainy season.

Peter Mensah, Secretary of the Landlords Association, described the structure as a serious safety risk, warning that continued neglect could lead to more dangerous consequences.

He urged authorities to prioritise urgent repairs and reconstruction to restore safe access and prevent further disruption.

Residents are also calling for immediate action to address the flooding challenge and ease the burden on commuters during heavy rains.

The Obom–Odunkwa Bridge is a vital link connecting several communities within the Ga South Municipality, and its worsening condition remains a growing concern for both residents and local businesses.
