The Bono Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr. Isaac Amponsah Badu, has raised concern over illegal charges and co-payments being imposed by some healthcare providers, warning that the practice is discouraging many people from renewing their NHIS membership.

According to him, the unauthorised fees are gradually eroding public confidence in the National Health Insurance Scheme, as many cardholders are forced to pay unexpected hospital bills despite being registered under the scheme.
Mr. Badu explained that the situation has become a major challenge for the NHIA because frustrated subscribers often refuse to renew their membership after their cards expire.

He made the remarks during a courtesy call on the Sunyani Manhene, Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, at his palace.
The Bono Regional NHIA Manager said he has been working to strengthen and expand the scheme across the region since assuming office.
He disclosed that when he took over, two districts — Banda and Berekum West — did not have NHIA offices. He said construction is currently underway for permanent offices in both districts, while some existing offices are also being renovated to improve service delivery and expand access to health insurance services.
Mr. Badu stressed that improving infrastructure and restoring public trust remain key priorities for the authority in the Bono Region.
For his part, Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II commended the NHIS for supporting vulnerable people, especially during times of illness and financial difficulty.
He noted that the scheme continues to play an important role in improving healthcare access, particularly for people living in rural communities.
The Sunyani Manhene also urged NHIA officials and staff to carry out their responsibilities with honesty, commitment and professionalism to safeguard the credibility and long-term sustainability of the scheme for the benefit of Ghanaians.
