A devastating fire has destroyed a six-bedroom self-contained house at Atekyem, near Universal School in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident occurred on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after emergency responders received a distress call at about 11:14am.
In a statement shared on Facebook, the GNFS said a fire crew led by Assistant Divisional Officer Grade I (ADO I) Sagoe was immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived within 12 minutes, at approximately 11:26am.
By the time firefighters got there, the building had already been engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading rapidly from the roof of the house. Thick smoke and intense heat made firefighting efforts challenging as officers battled to stop the blaze from spreading to nearby properties.
After an intensive operation, the fire was brought under control at 12:21pm and completely extinguished by 12:57pm.
The inferno caused extensive damage to the property and destroyed most household items. However, firefighters managed to salvage a number of belongings, including a tabletop refrigerator, kitchen utensils, a 6kg gas cylinder, plastic storage racks and wash basins.
Fortunately, no injuries or deaths were recorded, a situation many residents described as remarkable given the extent of the destruction.
Following the incident, the GNFS renewed its appeal to the public to observe fire safety precautions at home and in workplaces to help prevent similar outbreaks.
