The Ghana Police Service has announced the arrest of seven individuals in connection with the robbery and hijacking of a fuel tanker at Teacher Mante in the Eastern Region.
In a statement dated August 11, 2025, the police reported that the suspects forcibly took control of a fuel tanker with registration number GT 2493-20, loaded with 5,400 liters of fuel, handcuffed the driver and his mate, and placed them in a pickup truck while two of the suspects drove the tanker away.
Preliminary investigations indicate that on August 6, 2025, the suspects, aboard a green pickup truck, intercepted the fuel tanker with registration number GT 2493-20 and forcibly took control of it. The driver and his mate were handcuffed and placed in the pickup, while two of the suspects drove the tanker away. On August 7, 2025, police personnel in the Accra Region intercepted the pickup and rescued the victims. The suspect in the cabin, identified as Christian Bortey Bernard, was arrested after a hot pursuit, the police statement said.
The statement further noted that police intelligence led to the location of the stolen tanker at a fuel station at Asikwa Junction, where an additional tanker and six other suspects were arrested.

On the same day, further intelligence led the police to a fuel filling station at Asikwa Junction near Bunso, where the stolen tanker was located alongside another fuel tanker with registration number GN 804-13. Six additional suspectsMark Abito, 34; Shaibu Adams, 27; Awini Ibrahim, 25; Muniru Ayeba, 19; Banabas Atiga, 26; and Abdullah Ganiu, 32were arrested. Two fuel tankers, a pumping machine, and a Golf car with registration number GW 5185-Z were impounded. The suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, the statement said.
The police urged the general public, including drivers and transport operators, to exercise vigilance and report suspicious activities and vehicles to the police.
The Command further warns individuals and groups engaging in criminal activities that the police will not relent in their efforts to pursue, arrest, and prosecute offenders to the fullest extent of the law, the police said.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has announced the promotion of two police officers for foiling the tanker robbery.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has promoted two officers of the Ghana Police Service for their diligence, dedication to duty, and vigilance during a snap check operation at Ablekuma Borkorborkor in the Greater Accra Region, which resulted in the rescue of two robbery victims and the arrest of seven suspects.

The officers, Chief Inspector Patience Kotoka and Constable Joseph Akondoh, both stationed at the Anyah District Police Command, together with four Community Police Assistants (CPAs), were honored by the IGP and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) at Police Headquarters on August 8, 2025.
Constable Joseph Akondoh was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal, while Chief Inspector Patience Kotoka was recommended to join the next Police Cadet Course at the Police Academy to be commissioned into the Senior Officer Corps of the service upon successful completion of the course, the Ghana Police Service stated in a post on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
