‘A lot of NPP founding members unhappy with direction and state of party’ – Kwame Pianim

A stateman, economist and an elder of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Pianim, has stated that many elders of the opposition NPP are unhappy with the current direction of the party.

Sharing his thoughts on the party’s decision to elect a flagbearer first before the grassroot elections on TV3 on August 11, 2025, he said that he does not agree to the approach.

In his estimation, the leadership needs to urgently stop and listen to the advice of their elders before advancing forward in most of their operations.

“I do not agree with it (election of flagbearer ahead of other grassroot elections). We are trying to restructure the party. We are trying to get the young people to halt, look and listen. So that they get the direction right. I know a lot of founding members who are unhappy with the direction and state of the party.

“I know a lot of them who are anxious and contacting the current leadership of the party. Both in parliament, national secretariate, and the council of elder to hold on first and stage a stakeholder engagement to look at the direction and state of the party. They are worried about the direction the young people have taken in the party. I hope that we will soon get our acts together, rebuild, restructure and build a united front to move forward,” he said.

Quizzed on whether the young people are listening to their counsel he said, “50% of the problem will be resolved if they listen because it is their future, not my future …if they refuse to listen to our counsel the NPP will become irrelevant to the politics of Ghana as the CPP has become.”

Kwame Pianim’s reactions follow internal wrangling in the New Patriotic Party, (NPP) leading to varying factions; a trend many political watchers have strongly cautioned could spell doom for the party.
