Preliminary report on helicopter crash expected within a month – AIB Commissioner

The Acting Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation and Prevention Bureau, John M. K. Wumborti, has disclosed that a preliminary report on the recent military helicopter crash is expected to be released within a month, in line with established protocols.

Speaking to GhanaWeb TV during the signing of the book of condolence at the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology on Monday, August 11, 2025, he said, “We have protocols that we follow to conduct investigations. The Air Force will trigger those protocols so that they will know when the investigation can be concluded. Normally, the protocol is one month; it will come out with a preliminary report.”

Addressing the tragedy that claimed the lives of eight people, including two prominent statesmen, Wumborti described all the victims as heroes who died in the line of duty.

He noted that the crash was a national tragedy and reiterated his appeal for unity and compassion.

“In fact, it is a loss to Ghana, not just the families. I just want to say to Ghanaians, please, this is not the time to apportion blame or anything else. We are in grief together; let’s mourn the heroes,” he said.

The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter crashed on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The crash claimed the lives of eight people: the Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah; the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator; and three crew members; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
