The government of Ghana has joined the global community to commemorate World AIDS Day 2025, using the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat and building a resilient national response.
This year’s global theme, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response”, underscores the need for strong health systems capable of withstanding shocks and safeguarding essential services. Ghana has adopted a national sub-theme, “Africa Unites Against AIDS”, which highlights the importance of regional solidarity and collective action.
Despite progress made through evidence-based prevention, treatment and care interventions, AIDS remains a significant concern in Ghana.
Current national estimates indicate that more than 334,700 people are living with HIV, while 2024 alone recorded over 15,200 new infections and more than 12,600 AIDS-related deaths. According to Government, the persistence of stigma and inconsistent prevention efforts continue to undermine gains.
To strengthen the response, Government has taken a series of major steps. In February 2025, the President directed the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for core HIV services following reductions in external support.
The Cabinet has also approved a revised National Workplace HIV and Wellness Policy to enhance prevention and protect workers.
Additionally, the government has launched the National HIV Response Sustainability Roadmap, a long-term plan aimed at mobilising domestic resources, expanding access to treatment and prevention, and building a resilient system that can sustain progress over time.
The statement emphasised that achieving an AIDS-free Ghana will require unity of purpose.
Government is calling for stronger private sector involvement, noting that HIV affects workforce productivity and overall economic growth.
Ghanaians are encouraged to know their HIV status, use HIV self-testing kits, seek prompt treatment, and stand firmly against stigma and discrimination.
