Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as entirely unjustified, insisting it forms part of what he terms a “suicide mission” being pursued by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
Mr Kpebu, who reported to the OSP on Wednesday, December 3, to assist with investigations into corruption allegations he has levelled against the Special Prosecutor, was detained following a confrontation with security personnel at the entrance to the OSP headquarters.
According to him, the arrest occurred even before investigators had an opportunity to question him. Speaking to TV3 shortly after his release, he said he remained baffled by the decision to detain him.
“I did nothing that warrants an arrest. It felt unreal—almost like a fairytale—so I kept my spirits high,” he remarked.
He accused the OSP, under Mr Agyebeng’s leadership, of adopting a reckless and confrontational approach that risks damaging the credibility of the institution.
“This whole episode is a suicide mission that Kissi Agyebeng’s OSP has embarked on. He may claim he has nothing to do with it, but he is the head of the institution,” Mr Kpebu asserted.
His arrest has further heightened the already strained relationship between him and the OSP. The lawyer has repeatedly questioned the office’s internal processes, including what he describes as the inappropriate use of junior officers to handle sensitive investigations.
He maintains that only an independent body—rather than officers answerable to the Special Prosecutor—can properly examine the corruption allegations he has raised.
Mr Kpebu has also been a vocal critic of the OSP’s handling of other high-profile investigations, including the probe into former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, arguing that the office failed to follow crucial procedural requirements.
