NPP flagbearer race: Bryan Acheampong appeals for unity ahead of 2028 elections

NPP presidential hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong has urged party delegates to put internal rivalries behind them and focus on unity as the New Patriotic Party prepares for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to delegates in Suhum on Monday, January 19, during the second stop of his Eastern Region campaign tour, Dr Acheampong said divisions left over from the 2023 primaries are still weighing heavily on the party and could hurt its chances if they are not addressed.

According to him, many party members are yet to move on from the bruising internal contest, making it crucial for the NPP to rise above personal ambitions and rally around a candidate who can unite the party.

“The pain from the 2023 primaries is still fresh for many people,” he said. “That’s why we must set aside our individual interests and come together behind someone who can heal the cracks. I’m asking for your support so we can rebuild unity and win back power in 2028.”

Dr Acheampong also questioned how the party currently manages its internal competitions, urging delegates to place the collective strength of the NPP above factional loyalties.

“We need to ask ourselves whether this is the best way to run the party,” he noted. “If our goal is to return to power, then unity must come first—above everything else.”

Warning about the dangers of lingering divisions, he said unresolved tensions between different camps could weaken the party going into the next election.

“Can we honestly say that if one candidate wins, supporters of the others will fully come on board in 2028?” he asked. “That situation cannot continue. I believe I am the one who can bring everyone together.”

Dr Acheampong is one of five contenders seeking the NPP flagbearer slot to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

The order of candidates on the ballot paper is as follows:

  1. Ken Ohene Agyapong: Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central.
  2. Dr. Bryan Acheampong: Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi.
  3. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia: Former Vice President and the party’s 2024 flagbearer.
  4. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum: Former Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe.
  5. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong: Former General Secretary of the NPP.
