Former Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama has described Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the most visible and widely recognised political figure in Ghana, second only to President John Mahama.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, January 21, he pointed to Dr Bawumia’s strong public presence as a key advantage ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer primaries.
“Dr Bawumia has remained firmly in the public space for years,” he said. “His policies, ideas and initiatives have been clearly communicated to people across all regions. In recent times, only President Mahama has enjoyed a similar level of visibility.”
According to Farouk Aliu Mahama, this level of recognition gives Dr Bawumia a clear edge, both among party delegates and the wider electorate.
He stressed, however, that Bawumia’s prominence goes beyond frequent public appearances. “What truly sets him apart is substance,” he explained. “He has been promoted on the back of real work and a clear vision for Ghana. His record as Vice President and his role as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate continue to resonate with party supporters and ordinary Ghanaians alike.”
Turning to the upcoming primaries, he urged NPP delegates to look beyond factional loyalties and focus on competence and electability.
“This is not just about where your loyalty lies,” he said. “It’s about who can lead the party to victory. Dr Bawumia’s ability to connect with people, explain policies clearly and inspire confidence makes him stand out.”
He ended by calling for unity around a strong and credible candidate. “Delegates have a responsibility to choose someone with competence, vision and broad national appeal,” he added. “Dr Bawumia checks all those boxes, and I am confident he will receive overwhelming support in the primaries.”
