GOC Hails Ghana Sports Fund as Boost for Athlete Development

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has welcomed the passage of the Sports Fund Bill, describing it as a timely step toward tackling the persistent funding challenges facing Ghana’s sports sector.

GOC President Richard Akpokavie said the creation of the Fund provides what has long been missing — a dedicated and reliable source of financing for sports development. He noted that inconsistent funding over the years has slowed the progress of many sporting disciplines.

Akpokavie likened the initiative to other earmarked national funding streams, explaining that the Sports Fund offers a more structured and predictable approach to financing. In his view, this goes beyond simply supporting participation in competitions and instead creates a framework for sustained development.

The GOC pointed out that limited financial resources have historically affected key areas such as athlete preparation, infrastructure, technical training, and grassroots programmes. With a dedicated Fund in place, the Committee believes national federations will be better positioned to plan long-term and strengthen support systems for athletes.

According to the GOC, federations are expected to benefit through improved operational capacity as well as better preparations for continental and international events.

The Committee also acknowledged the role of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie, commending his involvement in the process that led to the Bill’s approval.

In a statement issued by its Communications Department, the GOC expressed optimism that the Fund will help promote stronger management practices and more effective oversight within Ghana’s sports sector.
