An Uber driver in Accra is recounting a frightening encounter with suspected car snatchers — and raising troubling allegations about his treatment at a public hospital afterward.
Frank Boakye says he was attacked while on duty by individuals he believes intended to steal his vehicle. According to him, the situation quickly turned violent, but he fought back and managed to resist the attackers. With the help of passersby who rushed to his aid, the suspects were subdued and later handed over to the police.
“I was just trying to do my job,” Boakye reportedly said, describing the ordeal as terrifying but saying he was grateful for the timely intervention of bystanders.
Following the incident, police referred him to Ussher Hospital for medical examination and documentation to support the ongoing investigation. However, Boakye now alleges that his ordeal did not end there.
He claims that upon arriving at the hospital for treatment and to have his police medical report completed, a doctor refused to sign the required documents unless he paid GH₵2,000.
According to Boakye, the demand came as a shock, especially given that the report was needed for an active criminal case. He says he felt frustrated and distressed, having just survived a traumatic attack.
The allegations have sparked concern, particularly at a time when public trust in essential services remains a sensitive issue. As of now, hospital authorities have not publicly responded to the claims.
Meanwhile, police are said to be continuing investigations into the attempted car snatching, while questions linger over the alleged demand at the health facility.
