Ghana Commemorates 2026 Commonwealth Day, Calls for Global Cooperation and Development

Ghana has joined countries across the Commonwealth of Nations to mark Commonwealth Day 2026, holding a flag-raising ceremony at the forecourt of the State House.

The event, held on Monday, March 9, formed part of activities taking place in Commonwealth member states around the world to commemorate the annual occasion.

This year’s celebration is themed “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” highlighting the need for stronger cooperation, innovation and solidarity among member countries. The theme also emphasises collective efforts to tackle global challenges while creating more opportunities for economic growth, sustainable development and youth empowerment.

Addressing the gathering, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the core values of the Commonwealth of Nations, including democracy, peace, good governance, human rights, and multilateral cooperation.

He highlighted Ghana’s active role in promoting international peace and security and emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among nations to tackle emerging global challenges.

Mr. Muntaka noted that Ghana’s key focus areas within the Commonwealth framework include climate resilience, digital transformation, and youth empowerment. He called on member states to work together to build a more prosperous, inclusive, and forward-looking global community.

A message from the King Charles III was delivered by the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg.

In his statement, King Charles called on Commonwealth nations to collaborate in protecting the planet, empowering young people, and building a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The message also emphasized the importance of stronger cooperation to tackle pressing global challenges, including climate change and sustainable development, while harnessing the potential of the Commonwealth’s growing youthful population.

The Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, John Obeng Apea, highlighted the need to deepen economic partnerships among member states.

He described the Commonwealth as a unique, voluntary network of nations bound by shared values, including democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, stressing that trust, collaboration, and innovation are vital for promoting inclusive and sustainable development.

As part of the Commonwealth Day celebrations, a photo exhibition was held to highlight Ghana’s active participation within the Commonwealth.

The ceremony drew members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, representatives of international organisations, religious and traditional leaders, and personnel from the security services.
