Ghana Welcomes Largest-Ever Group of U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers

Ghana has welcomed its largest group of new volunteers under the Peace Corps programme, with 30 Americans set to begin service in communities across the country.

The initiative, which began 65 years ago, continues to support Ghana’s development in key sectors such as agriculture, health and education, while also strengthening ties between Ghana and the United States.

Since its inception, nearly 5,000 volunteers have served in all 16 regions, working alongside local communities, traditional leaders and government institutions to promote sustainable development.

Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony in Accra, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy, Rolf Olson, described the programme as a powerful platform for collaboration and service.

He noted that the Peace Corps is grounded in the belief that strong communities and partnerships can drive meaningful change, adding that its mission remains centred on peace, friendship and shared progress.

“Each one of you embodies the best that America has to offer in diplomacy, peace-building and sustainable development,” he told the volunteers, congratulating them on completing their training and wishing them well as they begin their assignments.

As Ghana adapts to rapid technological change, Peace Corps Ghana is also expanding its focus to include digital literacy across its programmes. Volunteers are helping students develop skills to assess online information, supporting health workers with digital record systems, and introducing young people to emerging technologies in a responsible and inclusive way.

Government officials at the ceremony welcomed the new cohort and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the partnership. Grace Ayensu-Danquah and Clement Abas Apaak both expressed appreciation for the long-standing collaboration, highlighting the significant role Peace Corps volunteers have played in supporting development efforts across the country.
