The government has assured workers at the Damang Mine that their jobs will be protected as Gold Fields Ghana prepares to exit the site when its mining lease expires on April 18, 2026.
Speaking during a visit to the mine on Wednesday, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, said efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition that prioritises the welfare of employees.
Gold Fields Ghana is set to end its nearly 30-year operation at Damang, but the minister stressed that the government is committed to keeping the mine running and safeguarding jobs beyond the lease period.
He revealed that a competitive and transparent tender process has already been launched to identify a capable investor to take over operations and manage the mine efficiently.
Members of Parliament who accompanied the minister also backed the move.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Mines and Natural Resources, Collins Dauda, expressed confidence that the mine will remain operational after the lease expires, noting that preparations are focused on ensuring a seamless transition.
The Ranking Member of the committee, Apratwum Sarpong, echoed similar sentiments, stating that the minority’s priority is to see a credible investor take over the mine so the country continues to benefit from its resources.
