UCC Administrator Calls for Strong Career Guidance, Criticises Random Course Selection

An Administrator at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Fosu-Boakye Isaac, has raised concern about the lack of proper career guidance for students as they progress through the education system.

Speaking on the programme “Me Man Ho Dadwen” with Apiah-Kubi, he described the situation as a growing challenge that leaves many students uncertain about their future professions.

He noted that the issue is particularly serious at the Junior High School (JHS) level, where students are expected to begin selecting career paths as they transition to Senior High School based on their strengths and abilities.

“Most students are skeptical when it comes to choosing careers in the education system. This has been very worrying and it leaves many of our school-going youth confused,” he said.

Fosu-Boakye stressed that parents and guardians have a key role to play in guiding their children, especially when it comes to selecting academic programmes from the JHS level.

He urged families to be intentional about their children’s education and future careers.

He also encouraged students to take time to understand their purpose when choosing courses, adding that informed decisions can significantly shape their future outcomes.

According to him, this becomes possible only when parents closely observe and assess their children’s strengths and abilities.

“Parents must carefully monitor and guide their wards on what they can do in the future.

Whether you want him or her to be a doctor, teacher, lawyer, etc., it must have a purpose. You must have eyes to monitor your child’s capabilities — don’t just allow him or her to choose anyhow,” he said.

He concluded by emphasizing that making the right programme and career choices can bring meaningful change in a person’s life.
