Walewale NDC executives urge calm and dialogue after youth protest in West Mamprusi

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Walewale Constituency has responded to rising tensions in the West Mamprusi Municipality following a protest by aggrieved youth that led to the closure of the Municipal Coordinating Director’s office.

The office remained locked until Wednesday, when it was reopened after the deployment of armed military personnel. However, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Justice Bayon, has yet to return to work.

In a statement issued after the incident and signed by Communications Officer Mashood Issifu Mahama, the party acknowledged the concerns raised by the protesting youth, noting that their frustrations are largely linked to post-election issues, unemployment, and perceived neglect by authorities.

While condemning the methods used during the protest, the NDC executives stressed the need to urgently address the underlying grievances.

“The concerns raised by the youth cannot be ignored,” the statement said, adding that constructive engagement remains the best path toward resolving the situation.

The party has therefore called on government appointees and relevant authorities to open dialogue with the youth in order to de-escalate tensions and restore calm in the municipality.

At the same time, the NDC offered assurances to technocrats and public servants at the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly, emphasising the need to protect their work environment.

The statement reaffirmed the party’s commitment to safeguarding the independence of technocrats, insisting that they must be able to carry out their duties without fear, intimidation, or political interference.

It noted that technocrats play a vital role in governance and development, adding that their neutrality and expertise are essential for effective policy implementation.

The party also reiterated its support for the government’s “Reset Agenda,” which focuses on strengthening institutions, improving accountability, and promoting inclusive development.

The Walewale NDC executives further urged all stakeholders—including political actors, youth groups, and public officials—to exercise restraint and prioritise peace as efforts continue to resolve the matter.

“The path to sustainable development lies in cooperation, dialogue, and mutual respect among all parties,” the statement concluded.

The incident has also drawn attention to wider socio-economic challenges in the area, particularly youth unemployment, which remains a major concern across the region.
