Tunisia seals 2026 World Cup spot with dramatic late winner

Tunisia have secured their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane’s stoppage-time strike sealed a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea on Monday.

The midfielder netted in the fourth minute of added time, finishing coolly from a Firas Chaouat assist to ignite jubilant celebrations among the Carthage Eagles and their traveling supporters.

The result confirms Tunisia’s place in North America with two qualifiers still to play.

Sitting comfortably at the top of Group H, Tunisia have collected 22 points from eight games, 10 ahead of second-placed Namibia, who hold a game in hand. Remarkably, the North Africans have yet to concede a single goal in the campaign.

This qualification marks Tunisia’s seventh World Cup appearance and their third in a row, having competed in Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, though both campaigns ended at the group stage.

The Carthage Eagles are the second African nation to book their spot at the tournament, joining Morocco, who earlier confirmed qualification with a commanding 5-0 win over Niger in Rabat.
