Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz says home-based players still have a chance of making the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting selection will be based on merit and performance.
Local players have struggled in recent years to secure places in the senior national team, which has been heavily dominated by foreign-based professionals. Currently, Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare remains the only regular home-based player in the squad.
Speaking during his official unveiling, the Portuguese tactician stressed that every player would be given a fair opportunity to earn a call-up.
“Nobody owns the national team shirt. That must be clear,” Queiroz stated.
“The players dream to represent the country, and it is our job to give them a fair and right opportunity. My job is to ensure that the players who wear the shirt are those who deserve to be there.”
He added that his final selection would focus on players who are capable, fit, and experienced enough to compete at the highest level.
Queiroz is expected to submit his final squad for the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup by June 1.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama for the tournament.
The Black Stars will be hoping to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
