Three killed, 34 arrested in deadly Funsi chieftaincy clash in Upper West

Three people have been confirmed dead while 34 suspects have been arrested following a violent shooting incident linked to a chieftaincy dispute at Funsi in the Wa East District of the Upper West Region.

The deadly clash, which erupted on the night of May 22, 2026, has heightened tension in the community and triggered a major security operation by the Upper West Regional Police Command to restore calm and prevent further violence.

In a statement, Police said officers were initially alerted to a shooting incident in the Gbelonosi area of Funsi, where two people were reported dead.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the bodies of 37-year-old Fufulu Nandug and 22-year-old Yussif Samahan, both of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

A subsequent search operation within the community led to the discovery of a third body, identified as 20-year-old Amadu Lukman, bringing the death toll to three.

Police believe the killings are connected to a longstanding chieftaincy dispute in the area, which has sparked periodic tensions between rival factions over the years.

Following the incident, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police Francis Yiribaare, led a reinforcement team to Funsi to support ongoing investigations and help stabilise the situation.

According to the Police, 34 suspects have so far been arrested as security operations intensify across the community.

Security personnel also retrieved several items believed to be linked to the disturbances, including a shotgun, bows and arrows, quantities of gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks, and a medallion said to be associated with rival factions involved in the conflict.

Police said all suspects and the retrieved exhibits have been transferred to Wa to assist with investigations and possible prosecution.

Investigators are currently working to establish the circumstances that led to the violence and identify all individuals connected to the shooting.

The Ghana Police Service extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the full rigours of the law.

Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Police Command has appealed to residents of Funsi to remain calm, avoid reprisals, and cooperate with security agencies by volunteering credible information to support investigations.

Additional security personnel have since been deployed to the area, with intensified patrols ongoing to prevent further escalation and restore lasting peace in the community.
