At least three people have been confirmed dead after a vehicle collided with an elephant inside Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda, authorities have said.
According to the Uganda Police Force, four others sustained injuries in the incident, which occurred on Sunday evening.
Police said the vehicle was carrying seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) at the time of the crash.
The vehicle was reportedly travelling from Arua to the capital, Kampala, when it collided with the elephant within the national park.
The injured victims were initially taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Kampala for further medical treatment.
Authorities did not provide details about the condition of the elephant following the collision.
Following the incident, the Uganda Wildlife Authority urged motorists travelling through protected wildlife areas to exercise greater caution.
“Motorists travelling through Protected Areas are strongly advised to drive cautiously, as wild animals frequently cross the roads,” the authority said.
Road accidents remain a major concern in Uganda, while encounters between humans and wildlife have also increased in recent years as expanding settlements continue to encroach on protected conservation areas.
