Cracks spotted on Tema Motorway Interchange, sparking safety and durability concerns

Motorists and commuters who use the Tema Motorway Interchange have raised concerns over visible cracks that have appeared on sections of the recently asphalted road surface.

The cracks, observed on parts of the interchange along the Tema–Afienya-Akosombo stretch, have sparked questions about the durability and condition of the road, especially as traffic volumes continue to grow on the busy route.

A prominent diagonal crack has emerged on portions of the asphalt surface, prompting fears among road users that the damage could worsen if prompt corrective action is not taken.

Some motorists described the development as troubling, given the strategic role of the interchange as a key transport link connecting Tema, Accra and several other parts of the country.

“We use this road every day, and it is concerning to see cracks developing on the surface. We hope the authorities will assess the situation and address it before it worsens,” a commercial driver told Graphic Online.

Road users are therefore urging the relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the cracks and undertake the necessary repairs to prevent further deterioration.

Background

The first phase of the Tema Motorway Interchange was opened to traffic on May 16, 2020, transforming the former roundabout into a modern interchange. The facility remains one of Ghana’s most significant road infrastructure projects, facilitating the movement of people and goods along the eastern corridor of the N1 Highway.

The second phase, featuring a high-quality steel girder bridge linking Tema to the Akosombo route, was commissioned in December 2024.

Commuters have warned that any deterioration of the road surface could eventually affect traffic flow and road safety. They stressed the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of major road infrastructure to protect public investments, enhance safety and extend the lifespan of critical transport assets.
