Black Stars’ Brandon Thomas-Asante Pushes for Starting Role After Match-Winning Assist Against Panama

Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante says he is eager to start more matches for Ghana but understands that every player has a role to play within a team.

The Coventry City striker made a decisive impact from the bench in Ghana’s opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, providing the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s winning goal against Panama.

Yirenkyi’s strike secured a 1-0 victory for the Black Stars, ending a seven-match winless run and earning Ghana a valuable three points in their tournament opener.

Reflecting on his contribution after the match, Thomas-Asante admitted he would have loved to get on the scoresheet himself but was satisfied with helping the team secure the win.

“I just wanted to do what I did really. I would have probably liked a goal as well, but the main thing was the win,” he said.

The forward noted that throughout his career, he has often been called upon to make an impact after coming off the bench and believes being prepared for such moments is an important part of the game.

“My style of play means that even when I’m on the bench, there’s usually an opportunity to come on and influence the game,” he explained.

“Of course, I’d like to start every game, but that’s not how football works. You have to be ready for any occasion. Today, my job was to come on and make an impact, and I’m happy I was able to contribute.”

Thomas-Asante also praised his teammates for their performance before his introduction, highlighting the collective effort that laid the foundation for the victory.

“It was a team performance. We got to that stage at 0-0 because the team defended well and created opportunities before I came on. Credit goes to everyone and, of course, to Caleb for scoring the goal.”

Following his impressive cameo against Panama, Thomas-Asante will hope he has done enough to earn a place in the starting lineup when Ghana face England in their second group match.
