The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun installing new public waste bins in the Central Business District (CBD) to boost sanitation and encourage proper waste disposal.
The initiative follows a donation of 20 bins by Duraplast on Tuesday, March 17, aimed at supporting the Assembly’s efforts to strengthen waste management across the city.
The bins have been strategically placed along the busy Kinbu to CMB stretch, an area known for high pedestrian and vehicular traffic and significant waste generation.
Speaking during the installation, the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, said the bins were positioned to serve traders, pedestrians, and roadside operators, helping manage the daily waste produced in the area.

The Mayor assured residents that the Assembly would maintain regular waste collection, with sanitation workers and trucks deployed daily to empty the bins and keep public areas clean.
He, however, cautioned that the bins are not intended for household waste, warning residents against dumping refuse from their homes into the public bins. “Anyone found doing so will be arrested and prosecuted under the law,” he said.
The Mayor called on the public to support the initiative by using the bins responsibly, emphasising that keeping the city clean requires a collective effort.

The Mayor urged corporate organisations to support the initiative and collaborate with the Assembly to enhance sanitation across the city.
At the handover of the bins, Duraplast Executive Director, Ms Mireille Hitti, said the donation reflects the company’s commitment to national development and environmental sustainability.
“As a Ghanaian company, our responsibility goes beyond manufacturing,” she said. “We aim to support initiatives that foster a cleaner and healthier environment.”
Ms Hitti highlighted sanitation as a major challenge in Accra, emphasising that proper waste management is vital for public health, environmental protection, and civic pride.

She expressed confidence that the introduction of waste bins would encourage residents and businesses to adopt more responsible waste disposal practices.
Ms Hitti also called for closer collaboration between the public, private sector, and other stakeholders, urging everyone to take ownership of their environment and support the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) sanitation efforts.
She praised the AMA’s leadership for their commitment to improving sanitation and reaffirmed Duraplast’s willingness to back similar initiatives in the future.
