JoyNews brings you scenes from the Akwatia constituency in the Eastern Region, where the Electoral Commission is conducting a parliamentary by-election following the sudden demise of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Kumi.
As of 7 a.m., voting had commenced, with constituents casting their ballots. The contest is between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP.
The late MP represented the constituency on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Today, Tuesday, 2 September, more than 50,000 registered voters are expected to participate in the exercise.
Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Titus Glover is serving as a polling agent at the Wenchi Durbar grounds polling station. He was captured busily cross-checking the ballot papers.
NDC National Organiser Mr. Joseph Yamin says they don’t envisage any violence, but they will not allow themselves to be intimidated.At 7:11 am,the first vote was cast at the Wenchi Durbar grounds.At7:16 amm, voting started at the Salvation Primary polling centre at Topremang, with 554 voters expected to cast their ballots.Sammy Awuku, Justin Kodua, Afenyo Markin, and the NPP PC, among others, arrive at the Beauty of Nature Polling station at Bodua.
Polling is expected to close at 5 p.m.
The NPP PC, Solomon Owusu and Sammy Awuku express satisfaction with the arrangements.
