The Member of Parliament-elect for Akwatia, Bernard Baidoo, has rejected suggestions by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that ongoing road construction in parts of the constituency was politically motivated ahead of Tuesday’s by-election.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Baidoo explained that the project was approved following a direct appeal from local chiefs to the President, well before the election.
“The demand came from the chiefs, and the government had no option but to do it,” he stated.
He revealed that when the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, visited the constituency, the chiefs requested urgent interventions in their communities.
“On the day the Chief of Staff visited, the chiefs demanded some immediate interventions for their communities, regardless of the by-election,” Baidoo clarified.
The MP-elect stressed that the timing of the road works was purely coincidental and not politically driven.
According to him, the ongoing nature of the project is proof that it was not an election gimmick.
“As we speak, even today, they are still constructing the road. We are done with the election, so it wasn’t meant for the election,” he argued.
