The national armwrestling team, the Golden Arms, has returned from Albena, Bulgaria, where they displayed resilience, strength, and skill to win three medals at the just-ended 46th World Armwrestling and 27th Para Armwrestling Championship.
Ghana’s Golden Arms made history at the global event with an impressive haul of two silver medals and one bronze—a success made possible through the support of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). The Ghana Armwrestling Federation has expressed profound gratitude to the Authority for its pivotal role.
Mabel Yeboah, a civilian officer with the Ghana Prisons Service, made her debut at the World Championship and quickly became a fan favourite. She demolished opponents from Turkey, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and others to win bronze in the 60kg youth women’s left arm and silver in the right arm of the same category.
Immigration Officer Blessed Abeka Nunoo, after a tough opening day, revised her strategy and adopted the hook style. Her resilience carried her through to the finals, where she secured another silver medal for Ghana—bringing pride not only to the nation but also to the entire African continent.
The dexterity of the Golden Arms was the talk of the tournament. Coaches and federation heads from across the world applauded their style and technique, with match after match earning standing ovations.
Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, was thrilled with the team’s performance. He attributed the success to the unwavering support of the NHIA and expressed gratitude to both the Authority and the NHIS insurance scheme for ensuring Ghana’s participation.
He noted that the NHIA’s backing played a significant role in the team’s training and preparation, boosting morale and ensuring a successful outing. Describing the Authority as a “cornerstone of the team’s growth and development,” he praised their consistent support over the years.
Mr. Osei Asibey also called on corporate Ghana and state institutions to emulate the NHIA’s example in supporting sports development. He extended appreciation to the Ghana Tourism Authority, OmniBSIC Bank, Ghana Olympic Committee, National Sports Authority, National Lottery Authority, National Petroleum Authority, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and the Ghana Police Service for their roles in supporting the July Africa Armwrestling Championship, where Ghana won 55 medals.
With the World Championship behind them, the Golden Arms are now shifting focus to the 2026 Africa Armwrestling Championship, to be hosted in Accra, and the 2027 African Games in Egypt.
Delegation leader Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Hon. Joseph Cudjoe, and Team Manager Abbas Sulley have also been commended for their leadership in guiding the team to medal-winning success.
