The Leukaemia Project Foundation (LPF), in partnership with the Accra Polo Club, hosted the first edition of the Captain’s Cup, a special polo tournament dedicated to raising awareness and funds for leukaemia patients.

The event saw Ashanti Royals and Delaney Polo team go head-to-head in an exciting contest in the final, with Delaney emerging as eventual winners.

The tournament climaxed with a vibrant mix of social, entertainment, and auction activities, all aimed at supporting the Foundation’s vision of establishing a Centre for Haematology and Clinical Genetics (CHCG) at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

The centre is expected to reduce costs and waiting times for treatment, while offering more effective support to individuals living with leukaemia and other blood disorders.

“The Leukaemia Project Foundation is set to establish a Haematology Centre and a Clinical Genetics Centre to provide advanced and improved care for leukaemia patients,” said President of the Leukemia Project Foundation, Gérard Hillary Boakye.

“Currently, only a few families can afford to send their loved ones abroad for treatment, and even then, many lose their lives due to long waiting periods, delays in raising funds, and the extremely high cost of care. Our project seeks to change this by creating a dedicated centre where leukaemia will be addressed in greater depth, offering comprehensive care for Leukemia victims.”

Gerald Boakye also stated the importance of embarking on such projects through polo.

“The Accra Polo Club is also a high network
private members club and also an exciting game which brings people around so if you have a story to tell or need help, it’s one of the best places to start with.”

The French Ambassador to Ghana, Jules-Armand Aniambossou, who was also in attendance, commended the initiative and underscored the importance of addressing health challenges such as leukaemia through platforms like the Accra Polo Club.

“At a place like the Accra Polo Club is where rich people can meet, talk and share ideas. This is typically the right place where we can rally to fight and work together to find the best solution against any kind of health challenges”

The event also drew the support of public figures, including rapper Sarkodie and actress Joselyn Dumas, whose presence added star power and further amplified the campaign’s message.
