BBC Interview: Gyakie Celebrates Ebo Taylor’s Lasting Musical Legacy

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gyakie has shared a touching tribute to late highlife icon Ebo Taylor during an interview on BBC’s Focus on Africa.

Speaking on the programme, Gyakie reflected on how deeply Ebo Taylor’s music shaped her childhood. She described his songs as more than just background music — they were part of her early memories.

“I really felt this one because he’s been part of my childhood memories. My dad used to play his music when we were young. His songs were inclusive,” she said.

The “Forever” hitmaker admitted that news of his passing left her emotional. While saddened by the loss, she emphasised that his influence will continue to live on through his music.

“Hearing that he’s no more with us, I felt really emotional and sad that we can’t see him in person, but his music will live with us forever,” she added.

Ebo Taylor remains widely celebrated as one of Ghana’s most influential highlife pioneers, whose sound inspired generations of musicians across Africa and beyond. For artistes like Gyakie, his music didn’t just help define Ghana’s musical identity — it resonated far beyond the country’s borders, leaving a lasting mark on the global music scene.
