Bono East gets first-ever dialysis machines at Holy Family Hospital, ending patient travel woes

Residents of the Bono East Region have received a major boost in healthcare services with the arrival of the first-ever dialysis machines at Holy Family Hospital in Techiman.

On Friday, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund donated two dialysis machines to the hospital, ending years of hardship for patients who previously had to travel outside the region for life-saving treatment.

The donation is set to significantly enhance care for patients with kidney-related conditions in Techiman and the surrounding communities.

The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, officially handed over new dialysis machines to Holy Family Hospital, describing the intervention as a major step forward for renal care in the region.

“We are ending this dialysis drought today. Patients will no longer have to travel far—they can stay in the region and receive the care they need,” she said.

Darko-Opoku added that the Trust Fund remains committed to strengthening healthcare delivery nationwide and hinted at further interventions in the near future.

Hospital records show a growing demand for dialysis services. In 2025 alone, the facility treated 513 outpatients with kidney-related issues and admitted 218 patients with severe renal complications. Until now, the absence of dialysis machines forced patients to travel to other regions for treatment, often at significant financial and emotional cost.

Receiving the machines on behalf of the hospital, Clinical Coordinator Dr Jacqueline Asibey called the donation a long-awaited breakthrough for both the hospital and the surrounding communities.

“We are lost for words. We prayed and hoped for a day like this, and today it has come. And not just one machine, but two. Lives will be saved because of this,” she said, adding that trained personnel are ready to operate the equipment and dialysis services are set to begin immediately.

Dr Asibey also thanked HealthTeach Ghana, whose support to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund made the donation possible.

Holy Family Hospital, a secondary healthcare facility under the Christian Health Association of Ghana, serves a large population in the Bono East Region and neighbouring areas. Health officials say the new dialysis machines will not only ease the burden on patients and their families but also improve access to critical kidney care across the region.
