In the heart of Be’er Milka in southern Israel, located in the central Negev desert close to the Egyptian border, is an avid farmer who has chosen to do excellent farming the hard way.
Roey Yosef, a conservative farmer who adheres to organic farming practices, values quality farming has been farming in a desert for the past 13 years, where the harsh sun and arid conditions make farming a daunting task.
He has defied the odds to create a thriving organic oasis.
Mr Yosef, the community’s respected organic farmer who has spent years perfecting innovative techniques to cultivate the desert, producing a bounty of fresh, sustainable produce.
His farm, nestled amidst the desert landscape, is a testament to the power of ingenuity and dedication.
Using cutting-edge irrigation systems and organic farming methods, he has transformed the unforgiving desert soil into a fertile haven, teeming with life.
“I wanted to prove that even in the most challenging environments, it’s possible to grow healthy, sustainable food,” Roey Yosef explains.
“The desert’s unique conditions actually give us an advantage – the intense sunlight and dry air allow us to control pests and diseases naturally, without relying on chemicals.”
Roey Yosef’s farm produces a variety of crops, including cucumber, oranges, tomato berry, dates, and garden eggs, all certified organic and bursting with flavour.
His success has inspired neighbouring farmers to adopt similar methods, creating a ripple effect of sustainability in the region.
On Wednesday, December 10, a delegation from Planetech, a flagship annual programme that advocates climate innovation and technology in Israel, visited Roey Yose’s farm and interacted with him

“His innovative approach not only produces delicious food but also helps to conserve water, reduce carbon emissions, and support local communities.”
Enumerating his successes, he said some of the pressing challenges include the market for his produce.
