The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that, effective 1 August 2025, it will discontinue the issuance of aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ (DP) number plates at Ghana’s ports. Instead, only digital DP stickers will be issued to vehicles cleared at ports of entry, including Tema and Takoradi.
The move follows a successful pilot of the sticker-based system at the two major ports and is part of DVLA’s broader strategy to modernise its services, enhance security, and improve efficiency in vehicle registration.
In a statement, the Authority explained that the decision is aimed at streamlining port operations while delivering a more secure and seamless experience for clients.
“As part of our efforts to make DVLA services secure and efficient, aluminium DP plates will no longer be issued at the ports. Only sticker DP numbers will be provided,” the statement read.
To facilitate a smooth rollout, the DVLA is working in partnership with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to ensure that all vehicles issued with DP stickers receive mandatory insurance cover before leaving the ports.
The Authority is encouraging the general public, particularly vehicle importers, to cooperate with both DVLA and SIC during this transition.
Officials say the reform aligns with the Authority’s digital transformation agenda, reducing fraud risks and enhancing convenience for clients and institutions alike.
