The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has commissioned a new 33 kV sub-transmission feeder to receive increased capacity from an upgraded 50/66 MVA transformer of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
This milestone, which saw the new feeder being energised on August 24, 2025, to serve Obuasi and its environs, follows months of supply challenges after a fire outbreak damaged GRIDCo’s transformer supplying the Obuasi Bulk Supply Point (BSP).
This means the power supply was disrupted for thousands of homes and businesses in Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.
ECG deployed a dedicated standby team of engineers who shuttled weekly between Kumasi and Obuasi to sustain operations and to swiftly address technical challenges.
The team, within one and a half months, worked hand-in-hand with GRIDCo and its contractors to restore power.
The Electricity Company Limited, as part of the project, retired its existing 11 kV cables and connected new 33 kV cables to GRIDCo’s gantry and its own GIS panels at the Obuasi Substation.
This transition marks a significant improvement in the network’s resilience and capacity to serve the enclave.
General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Peter Kofi Fletcher, commended the teamwork and resilience that made the project possible at the commissioning.
“What we have achieved in Obuasi is proof of the power of collaboration and sacrifice. Our engineers, GRIDCo, contractors, and even AngloGold Ashanti—who supported some communities with power from their dedicated transformer during the crisis—all played a part.
“Today, we can confidently assure Obuasi and its surrounding areas of a stable and reliable electricity supply. This project is not just about power lines and transformers; it is about keeping homes lit, businesses thriving, and industries running.”
Ing Fletcher also extended its appreciation to the hardworking teams from Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ashanti South, the contractor, GRIDCo, and AngloGold Ashanti for their support and cooperation.
The successful commissioning means customers in Obuasi and adjoining communities can now look forward to a stable, efficient, and reliable electricity supply.
