ECOWAS and UN Women convene in Abuja to advance young women’s political leadership in West Africa

The ECOWAS Gender Development Centre (EGDC), in collaboration with UN Women (UNOWAS) and the EPSG Project, funded by the European Union and Germany and implemented by GIZ, has held a regional seminar in Abuja aimed at strengthening the political leadership of young women across West Africa and the Sahel.

The programme took place from 13th to 17th October 2025 and focused on enhancing young women’s roles within political parties and national parliaments.

The seminar brought together members of the ROAJELF network and leading gender experts to deliberate on key themes including political participation, leadership development, strategic communication and digital advocacy.

Proceedings concluded with the 5th ROAJELF General Assembly, during which the organisation renewed its leadership structures to reinforce sustained momentum for women’s political empowerment.

During the engagement, participants also held discussions with the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association (ECOFEPA) and presented a Declaration urging greater inclusion of women in governance structures across the region.

ECOFEPA reaffirmed its commitment to championing young female leaders, pledging continued and sustainable mentorship initiatives designed to nurture the next generation of women decision-makers in West Africa.
