Eggs flew off the shelves on the final day of The Multimedia Group X’mas Egg Market, as a massive turnout of shoppers snapped up thousands of crates, bringing the two-day initiative to a successful close.
The two-day initiative, held at the Joy FM car park, was jointly organised by The Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) and the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA).
It aimed at addressing the persistent egg glut confronting local poultry farmers while offering consumers affordable access to eggs and poultry products.
Speaking to Myjoyonline.com, a Veterinary Technician with GAPFA, Felicia Antwi, who supported KNS Farm, said the farm brought about 1,700 crates of eggs, with only about 150 crates remaining by the end of the final day.
She noted that sales were particularly brisk in the morning, with buyers trooping in to stock up, although patronage slowed slightly in the afternoon. Despite this, she described overall sales as “massive.”
Farm Manager for Fresh Yield, Isaac Manful, also reported strong patronage, disclosing that more than 300 crates of eggs had been sold by the close of the day.
He said buyers showed keen interest early in the day, even during periods of slower movement.
At Akoko Foto, farm assistant Nana Kwadwo shared a similar experience, saying that although sales appeared slow at certain points, customer turnout remained steady and overall sales had been impressive.
Consumers who visited the market expressed satisfaction with the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful, especially amid rising living costs ahead of the Christmas festivities.
Many said the quality of the eggs and poultry products, coupled with the reduced prices, encouraged them to purchase in larger quantities for household use.
Beyond the benefits to consumers, the X’mas Egg Market also provided much-needed relief to poultry farmers, many of whom have struggled with excess egg supply, declining prices, and rising production costs in recent months.
The strong turnout and near sell-out on the final day underscored the importance of such collaborative market interventions in supporting local agriculture while easing the burden on consumers.
