Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo has revealed that women now outnumber men in enrolment figures at Ghana’s tertiary institutions.

Speaking to Joy Learning TV at Plan International Ghana’s Girl Takeover initiative, he said this is proof that years of investment in girl-child education are finally bearing fruit, noting that female participation in education has steadily increased from the basic level to higher education.

“The good news is that at the last check at our tertiary institutions, women have taken over in terms of enrolment. At least I can speak for the University of Ghana and some other few institutions. Clearly, it means Ghana is doing something right,” he said.

He traced the success to long-standing national efforts, adding that governments from the PNDC era to the present have all contributed to this progress.

“When we started this girl-child education policy from the PNDC days through NDC, MPP, and now again NDC, the policy is bearing fruit. We are seeing the results in our schools where female enrolments are exceeding that of males,” he explained.
