Finance Ministry Set to Approve Recruitment of 450 Staff for National Sports Authority

The Ministry of Finance is expected to grant budgetary approval for the National Sports Authority (NSA) to recruit up to 450 staff, following weeks of consultations with the Sports Ministry and NSA management.

Once clearance is secured, the NSA will officially announce the vacancies as part of efforts to address longstanding staffing gaps across the organisation.

The move comes after earlier tensions between the NSA’s governing board and management, led by Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, over the recruitment of 17 staff members. The board had raised concerns that the appointments did not follow due process or receive its approval.

However, NSA management maintained that the hires were made on an emergency basis to keep operations running at a time when no governing board was in place. Mr Ankrah was appointed in March 2025, while the board was only inaugurated in December 2025.

The disagreement has since been resolved, paving the way for renewed efforts to secure financial clearance to fill the 450 vacancies, some of which have existed since 2024.

As part of the resolution, the affected staff have been asked by the Sports Minister to reapply, allowing the Public Services Commission to regularise their appointments.

Key areas facing critical shortages include technical roles such as coaches, grassroots sports development officers, and researchers. Other departments, including estates, security, IT, and marketing, are also said to be significantly understaffed.
