The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has weighed in on the public debate over the proposed replacement of the welcoming word ‘Akwaaba’ with ‘Oobakɛ’ at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
In a statement, the Minister emphasised the importance of preserving the Ga language and cultural identity, noting that the Ga people, as custodians of the land on which the capital city stands, have every right to raise concerns about cultural preservation.
“At the same time, it must be emphasised that Ghana is a nation built on unity in diversity,” she said, noting that the government recognises the voices of all ethnic groups in decisions concerning national culture and heritage.
Madam Ocloo stated that she is against any form of tribalism or ethnic division.
“Decisions concerning matters of culture and heritage must therefore be made with sensitivity, broad consultation and national interest at heart,” she stated.
The Minister assured that the government would engage stakeholders widely and pursue a balanced approach that honours Ga-Dangme heritage while maintaining national cohesion.
“The preservation of Ga culture is not in opposition to national cohesion. Rather, it is an integral part of our collective identity,” she added.
