The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ernest Kofi Davis, has praised the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for its Distinction Awards, describing the initiative as a vital step in recognising and promoting educational excellence.
Speaking at the WAEC Distinction Awards ceremony on Thursday, March 12, which celebrated Ghana’s top-performing candidates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Prof. Davis commended the council for honouring students who have excelled academically.
“I would like to commend WAEC for instituting this award scheme to recognise our young ones who have excelled in their examinations and for their commitment to maintaining high standards in educational assessment,” he said.
Prof. Davis noted that the ceremony not only celebrates academic achievement but also the values that underpin success.
“Today, we celebrate excellence, integrity, determination, and hard work,” he added.
Congratulating the awardees, he highlighted their achievement among thousands of candidates nationwide.
“The young men and women we honour today have shown that excellence is attainable through diligence and perseverance. I congratulate all awardees for standing out among the many thousands who wrote the examination,” he said.
He encouraged the students to remain focused and disciplined as they pursue higher education and career ambitions.
“You have made your parents, teachers, and indeed the entire nation proud. I urge you to stay studious, committed, and disciplined as you continue your educational journey,” he stated.
Prof. Davis also acknowledged the critical role of teachers, parents, and guardians in supporting the students’ success.
“I commend our dedicated teachers, parents, and guardians whose sacrifices, guidance, and motivation have propelled these young ones to this level,” he said.
The WAEC Distinction Awards are part of the council’s ongoing efforts to recognise exceptional WASSCE performance and encourage academic excellence across Ghana.
