Ghana committed to protecting refugees - Interior Minister

Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to safeguarding refugees and advancing durable solutions to the global refugee crisis.

Speaking at the 76th Annual Plenary Session of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee in Geneva, the Minister said Ghana remains steadfast in upholding the ideals of the Global Compact for Refugees (GCR).

He noted that Ghana continues to collaborate closely with countries of origin to ensure the effective implementation of durable solutions, including legal, social, and economic reintegration measures.

“Ghana has made significant progress in working with countries of origin to ensure the efficient accomplishment of all aspects of durable solutions, including the legal aspects of it,” the Minister said.

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak further announced that the government, in partnership with the UNHCR, is implementing the Ghana Refugee Agribusiness Sustainability Programme (GRASP), a flagship initiative designed to create sustainable livelihoods for refugees and host communities through agribusiness ventures.

He revealed that Ghana is working with neighbouring countries to develop a sub-regional strategy that strengthens national security while ensuring refugee protection and facilitating long-term solutions.

The Minister also commended the outgoing UNHCR High Commissioner, Mr Filippo Grandi, for his outstanding leadership and unwavering dedication to refugee welfare, describing his tenure as “a period of renewed global solidarity and commitment to the protection of displaced persons.”

Mr Mohammed-Mubarak reaffirmed Ghana’s resolve to continue working with international partners to promote peace, security, and sustainable development as part of its broader humanitarian agenda.
