Ghana sends para powerlifting team to Commonwealth Games training camp in South Africa

The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana (NPC Ghana) has announced that para powerlifter Tahiru Haruna and coach Prince Nyarko have departed for South Africa to represent the country at the 2026 Commonwealth Games GAP Training Camp in Stellenbosch.

The team left Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday and is expected to return on 29 March 2026, following an intensive training and competition programme aimed at preparing athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Organised by Commonwealth Sport in collaboration with Stellenbosch University, the camp brings together top para athletes, coaches, and officials from across Africa. It forms a key part of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Haruna, who has already secured qualification for the Games, is set to undergo high-performance training from 20 to 26 March, before participating in a competitive phase from 27 to 28 March. The programme is designed to sharpen his technique, build strength, and provide valuable competitive exposure ahead of the global event.

NPC Ghana credited the opportunity to strong collaboration with the Ghana Olympic Committee, whose role as a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation helped secure Ghana’s participation in the camp.

Participants will be hosted in Stellenbosch, where comprehensive arrangements have been made to support their performance and well-being, including accommodation, medical care, and safeguarding services.

The committee also expressed appreciation to its partners and stakeholders for their support in making the training opportunity possible.
