The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a fierce condemnation and a serious ultimatum following a disturbing incident at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, where a group identified as the ‘Reset Youth Wing’ allegedly besieged the premises and assaulted security personnel.
The incident, which went viral via social media video footage, involved the men openly demanding the transfer of the Medical Director via written notices.
In a statement released on November 8, 2025, the GMA warned that such interference in hospital administration is “unscrupulous and lawless” and poses an existential threat to healthcare delivery.
The GMA’s leadership, signing the statement, minced no words in describing the gravity of the attack.
The GMA described the conduct as “unscrupulous and lawless”, warning that such interference in the administrative processes of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is dangerous and undermines discipline and morale within the service.
The core of the dispute revolves around administrative matters—specifically, the transfer of a key management figure—which the GMA insists is the sole purview of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), not external pressure groups.
- The Threat: The group’s actions included besieging the facility and attempting to enforce their demand for the Medical Director’s immediate removal.
- The Violence: Security personnel who attempted to prevent the group from carrying out their unlawful acts were reportedly assaulted. This act of violence against security staff highlights a growing disregard for the rule of law within hospital settings.
The GMA emphasised that the rising trend of local youth groups attempting to coerce or remove hospital managers is a severe threat to the operational stability and safety of health workers.
The GMA emphasised that matters relating to staff transfers are the sole preserve of the Ghana Health Service and not individuals or groups acting outside established procedures. It said the increasing trend of youth groups storming health facilities to threaten or remove managers is a serious threat to the safety of health workers and the public.
Such acts, if allowed to continue, could dismantle the hierarchical and professional integrity required to run complex medical facilities like the Eastern Regional Hospital, which serves a population of over 3.2 million people in the Eastern Region.
Signed by GMA President, Dr. Frank Serebour, and General Secretary, Dr. Richard Selormey, the statement concluded with a forceful demand for immediate state action and a direct threat of industrial action.
- Immediate Prosecution: The GMA called on the police to immediately arrest and prosecute the men involved, noting that they are “clearly identifiable from the video.”
- Staff Protection: The Association further urged the GHS to immediately ensure the safety and protection of the Medical Director and other staff at the Koforidua facility.
- Strike Warning: In a clear sign of the seriousness of the threat, the GMA issued an ultimatum: “if the threats against the Medical Director are carried out, it would have no option but to advise all doctors at the hospital to suspend work with immediate effect.”
The Association assured the public that it is “closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary actions in due course,” putting the government and security services on notice regarding the safety of healthcare professionals.
