Guard the public purse with diligence – Mahama urges new envoys

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly sworn-in Ambassadors and High Commissioners to demonstrate integrity, efficiency, and accountability in the discharge of their duties abroad. He emphasised that their mandate goes beyond diplomacy to include prudent management of public resources.

Addressing them at the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday, September 4, the President underscored the importance of ethical conduct and financial discipline, reminding the envoys to be guided by the Public Financial Management Act and other relevant regulations in their stewardship of state funds.

“I urge you to guard the public purse with diligence and ensure that efficient service and ethical governance, the very values we are entrenching at home, shine through in every mission abroad,” the President emphasised.

President Mahama added that Ghana’s diplomatic missions must reflect the values of fairness, respect, and shared national purpose while safeguarding the dignity of citizens and protecting the country’s image on the international stage.

He also charged the envoys to carry Ghana’s story to the world, not only as a beacon of democracy and stability but also as a country open for business, embracing technology, and committed to partnerships that deliver prosperity for the youth and dignity for the working class.

“Your responsibilities go beyond representation. They also require strong leadership and sound administration. Your staff must be guided with fairness, respect, and a sense of shared purpose. The image of Ghana abroad is not only shaped by what you say, but also how you manage, serve, and uphold the dignity of every Ghanaian citizen that is under your care,” he added.
