Hearts of Oak edge Great Olympics to lift 2025 Democracy Cup

Hearts of Oak beat Great Olympics 1-0 at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday, September 5, 2025, to win the 2025 Democracy Cup.

The victory comes after the Phobians missed out on the inaugural edition, when they lost 2-1 to Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium. It also marked their first win over Olympics in nearly five years, ending a nine-game winless run against their city rivals.

Former President John Dramani Mahama performed the ceremonial kickoff after greeting both teams.

The opening half was evenly contested, with Hearts creating more openings but Olympics holding firm.

In the second half, Hearts raised their tempo following key substitutions, and the breakthrough arrived in the 70th minute. Substitute Kwesi Asmah latched onto a precise pass and fired home from inside the box to seal the win.

The Phobians pressed for a second, spurning several chances, while Olympics forced goalkeeper Sherrif Shuaib into a superb late save to preserve the lead.

Beyond the trophy, Hearts also earned the chance to face a yet-to-be-confirmed side in Germany.

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, supported by Ga Mantse Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, presented the trophy to the winners.

Mas-Ud Didi Dramani’s side now turn their focus to the Ghana Premier League, opening at home against Hohoe United on Friday, September 12.
