HeFRA shuts down Tamale Technical University Hospital over safety violations

The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital, citing severe breaches in safety and infection prevention standards.

In a statement signed by Dr Winfred Korletey Baah, Acting Registrar of HeFRA, the agency said intelligence reports supported by video footage and pictures revealed that healthcare delivery at the facility was taking place under “highly compromised safety and infection prevention conditions.”

“The intelligence reports received by the Agency have been corroborated by its Compliance and Enforcement directorate with a visit to the Hospital on Monday, 3rd November, 2025.

“Additionally, the facility has been operating with an expired HeFRA license. This poses serious concerns for public health and safety,” the statement said.

Following the investigation, HeFRA has ordered the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital, effective Friday, November 7, 2025.

The facility will remain shut until all identified safety gaps and infection control lapses are fully corrected.

Additionally, an administrative fine of GH¢35,000 has been imposed on the hospital for regulatory breaches.

The hospital is also required to regularise its licensing status with HeFRA before resuming operations and ensure the highest standards of safety in its service delivery to clients.
