Helicopter Crash: Dr Omane Boamah redefined politics in Ghana – Mahdi Jibril

Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has paid tribute to the late Minister of Defence, describing him as a transformational leader whose approach brought fresh energy and inclusivity to Ghana’s electoral process.

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV on Monday, August 12, 2025, Jibri stated that Dr Omane Bomah’s work ethics and approach to politics influenced the party’s strategy positively.

“Omane Boamah has brought different dynamics to elections. This is a person who always wants to get people involved in the electoral process. I know some of you were relying on his Facebook to know what he had posted, to know what was happening. We have never done it before.

“Previously, we ran the election as a secret call, but this time around, anything you discuss with him, anything that people must know, he brings it out. He will tell you, it’s not about the boxing, it’s not about the fight, let’s use one plus one to win the elections,” he noted.

Jibril also described the minister’s loss as a blow to both the nation and the party, revealing that their conversations had already shifted beyond 2024 to strategising for the 2028 elections.

“It’s a huge loss for the nation, a huge loss for the party. I’ve worked with directors of elections, and I’ve kept saying that the leadership he brought in credibility, fairness, detail; that is what has just brought different dynamics to the elections. That is what gave us the win,” he said.

Reflecting on their working relationship, Jibri recounted the minister’s relentless dedication.

“From the time we were appointed, the conversation was about John Mahama must win the elections. We have no excuse, and whatever we have to do, we must do it. Let’s go to IPAC, let’s move to IPAC. While we were going back to IPAC, it was Omane pushing us. He would say, ‘I can’t wait, let’s move in.’ My wife would say, ‘Ah, does Omane sleep?’ Because 2 am, there’s a message on your phone for the next day’s activities.

“It’s about work, work, but his appreciation also for persons of knowledge but not title — it doesn’t matter who you are or your title, but what impact are you bringing. That is Omane for you. He doesn’t care whether you adopted this or that. No. Once you can deliver, that’s it,” he recounted.

The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 military helicopter was involved in a horrific crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.
