A presidential staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has called out MultiChoice Ghana amid its public dispute with the government.
Speaking on Prime Insights, the former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) told the broadcaster that if the company feels excessively burdened by regulatory demands, it should simply cease operations.
“This is a sovereign nation, and you are coming here to do business because you are earning money. So why are you here? If you’re not making a profit, you should just say, ‘You are stressing us, so we are folding up.’ The fact that you are still here means there is some kind of benefit that endures from your operations. So why don’t you calm down and say, ‘This is your country. I’m here.”
Nana Yaa Jantuah argued that MultiChoice’s continued presence in the market speaks to its profitability and they must act as such.
She emphasised that the issue transcends politics, saying, “It has nothing to do with politics. There is no bullying anywhere.”
The staffer indicated that the matter must rather be viewed through the lens of public interest and corporate responsibility.
Her remarks come amidst intense negotiations between the government, propelled by Communications Minister Sam George and MultiChoice, over what officials have described as “unjustifiably high” subscription prices.
The standoff has unfolded prominently in media headlines and on social platforms, with public expectations mounting for meaningful change.
Nana Yaa Jantuah’s comments echo earlier concerns she voiced back in August, when she joined the chorus calling for price reductions, accusing the broadcaster’s foreign content of being outdated.
