Katon360, a cutting-edge educational technology platform, is driving a digital transformation in Ghanaian education with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art smart classroom block at Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco).
The two-storey digital learning facility houses 10 smart classrooms, a technical room, a lecture hall, charging and repair rooms, and other auxiliary spaces. Every student receives a tablet preloaded with academic materials, designed to last three years, supporting continuous digital learning.
The smart block, fully equipped with modern digital tools, runs on solar power to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning.
President John Dramani Mahama commissioned the facility during Ghanasco’s 65th anniversary, describing it as a preview of Ghana’s educational future. He emphasised that the education sector is undergoing a crucial reset, anchored on innovation, technology, and future-ready instruction.
“This is already taking shape as Ghanasco benefits from a modern smart classroom, an early indication of the broader digital transformation intended to be rolled out nationwide,” the President said, noting that digital education is central to the revised national curriculum. He also urged students to use the tablets responsibly and avoid accessing inappropriate content online.
Lawrence Hornovo, Ghana Smart School Project Lead for Katon360, called the facility “a school of the future” and a major step toward digitalising Ghana’s education system.
“This is a full 21st-century learning experience. Every classroom has a smart screen, each student receives a tablet, charging cabinets are installed, and everything is solar powered. The facility is fully air-conditioned and connected to the internet. We are providing a comprehensive environment that prepares students to compete globally,” Hornovo said.
He reassured parents concerned about online access: “Every device has a tracker, and all unauthorised sites, including social media, are restricted. The system is designed purely for academic work.” He added that nationwide maintenance is in place, with technicians assigned to every district and devices covered by a one-year warranty.
Teachers report immediate benefits. Eric Addai, a Physics teacher, called the smart board “one of the best teaching experiences” of his career.
“The smart board summarises your work and allows you to upload materials in advance. Even when you’re not physically present, lessons can still be delivered. It keeps students attentive and ensures no one is left behind. Our main challenge is internet connectivity, but aside from that, the system is far more efficient than traditional methods,” he said.
Katon360 has also introduced Kanton Meet, a virtual meeting system supporting online teacher and administrative meetings beyond the school premises.
Students are equally enthusiastic. Iman Jeswinde Ismaila Abdul-Fatawu, a science student, said the platform has transformed learning:
“When I came here, I expected learning to be like JHS, but the Katon360 app has changed everything. With the tablets and access to facilitators, learning has become easier and more enjoyable. We thank the President and the government for this opportunity.”
The Ghanasco Smart Classroom Block is the second Katon360 facility in the country and the first in northern Ghana. With the government’s renewed focus on digital education, the initiative is expected to expand nationwide, providing thousands more students access to modern, technology-enhanced learning environments.
